Salt and Light

In Matthew 5:13-16

Jesus says:  “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

“Out from the salt shaker, Out from under the basket”

Joseph M. Stowell “The Trouble with Jesus”

As Christ followers, we live in a bland world.  As Christ followers, we live in a dark world.

Jesus answered his disciples in John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

We are to be the salt of this world.  What does that mean?  It means we are to avoid being grumpy, stagnant, boring, non-expressive “Christians” .

Christ gave His life, a ransom for many, He lived a celebrant life!  While the Pharisees were living in their do good life…. Fasting, following the rules, being pious, Jesus was feasting, hanging out with the sinners, and partyers.  He was the salt!

Instead of separating Himself from the ones who didn’t follow the rules, or avoiding those that didn’t agree with His teaching, He did the opposite, He relentlessly went after those people.

As Christians, we spend so much of our lives, going to church, attending our various functions, living in our comfortable settings.  We are to engage the world. We are to be Jesus to those that don’t know Him.

We don’t do this by finger pointing. “Oh, he’s gay, he is a sinner, we can’t associate with his kind.” ; “That guy is a drug dealer”; “Oh, that guy is having a beer, we can’t be around that.”

Jesus said come as you are! Why are we making rules for these people that don’t know Him yet?

I had a guy from my work ask me why I don’t drink alcohol, “is it against the rules??” I simply told him that nothing in moderation is sinful to do.  What might be a hindrance to me, might not be to him!  Once you follow Jesus, a lot of the stuff you think you had to give up, you’ll just do because there isn’t any room for it after Jesus fills you up!

We spend so much time pointing out peoples faults, when Jesus Himself , in Luke 5:30-32, in response to the Pharisees testing Him with, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

We can spend all day with our brothers and sisters in Christ, and there is nothing wrong with that, but how are we ministering to a non-Jesus world when this is all we do?

It’s safe, to be sure, it’s comfortable…oh yes! But what was the second half of the scripture above?

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

We are to engage the one that doesn’t know Jesus! We are to live our lives with Love, and own kind!  He took His message in the midst of people who were in DARKNESS!  He took His love to a bland, un-salty world!

We need to take the reality of Christ’s love and truth OUTSIDE OF THE CHURCH WALLS!

Don’t get me wrong, church dinners, and events are awesome, they heal us, refresh us.  But how are we living the commission in Matthew 28:19 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”?

Or in Mark 16:15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”

We need to be the salt in a bland world. Excited, joyful, POSITIVE in ALL situations!

We are to be the light on the hill! A dark and perverse nation needs the Jesus WE have in US!

Why do we want to keep Him to ourselves?  SALT the boring, mundane and bland world! Don’t give fodder to the rumor that “Christians are boring and live by a bunch of rules and regulations…”

BE THAT LIGHT!  Don’t just go to your brother to encourage…that’s easy!  Go OUT. Out of your comfort zone!  Talk to your neighbor who sneers when you walk out of your house with your Bible.  Go to that co-worker that seems to be seeking “something”.  Go to your mother or father who don’t even know Jesus at all!

Be the Salt and Light!
